In a recent trip to Spain I stayed in a 3 star hotel, I'll call it the "Pablo hotel" just to be sure to not escape the commonplaces...let's say it was "picturesque": dark, noisy, small rooms with broken air conditioning. A few steps from the "Pablo" there was another 3 star hotel that, for the same rate, offered spacious and better furnished rooms, bathrooms with marble baths and a modern lounge bar.

I returned home to write my first review on TripAdvisor...with a very soft and ironic tone, I just wanted to warn other travelers that, for the same price, they could lodge in a "better" hotel, but...

THE HOTEL WAS PROVIDING HOSPITALITY AND NOT JUST "RENTING ROOMS"

The Pablo Hotel was managed by a family that, dealing everyday with many problems due to lack of staff and resources, tried in any way to pay attention to its guests and to do anything possible to cater them with a personal, caring service.

Obviously this management could not spend a substantial budget on the hotel structure and services as the competitor, but this not means it had forgotten the basic foundations of the job.

During my stay I have known people who, with questionable results, worked hard day and night to accommodate guests in the best way possible. I felt like home, surrounded by friendly and forthcoming hosts.

The result? I didn't have "the guts" to publish my negative review.

GIVE YOUR GUESTS SOMETHING "PERSONAL" TO WRITE FOR

Whether you like it or not, there is always something "personal" that impels us to write a review, a subtle interests of "rewarding" or "punishing" the hotel staff.

When the "guest care" is successful, customers will want to return in some way "the favor", to make a "small gift" to a friend that housed us with heat and attention.

This is a critical point, because TripAdvisor's rankings are based not only on the

1. quality of votes

but also on the

2. time-frequency of reviews

Satisfaction for the attention received and the friendly relationship that develops between client and staff of the hotel leads to positive reviews and also pushes many more travelers to write on TripAdvisor (as on the other infinite forums and travel blogs on the web).

The same people perhaps wouldn't write a positive review just in case the hotel rooms were simply elegant and equipped with large plasma TV or Jacuzzi.

We mustn't forget that Web 2.0 is founded on interactive social relationships - kindness has still a great effect. And if your guests "like you", you're creating a small army of advertisers that will serve your marketing:

Many hoteliers complain that the negative reviews of their hotel are not "objective", forgetting that the positive ones are not different; the personal impression that a hotelier/staff gives its guests affects all the rest and is the first and most important factor that is evaluated, so important to influence the perception of the hotel itself...

Excluding the cleanliness of the room, all the rest it's widely varying according to the impression that the human relationship within the hotel has left; the rooms may seem small and bare, or not too large and neat depending on this kind of relationship and the mood you're able to create. We'll never read this kind of psychotic review:

"The staff was so welcoming and friendly, I felt like home. The Hotel sucks."

Hotel Metropol – an Example of Historical Moscow Hotels

You won’t find many hotels around the world nowadays that were built at the start of the 20th century but fortunately Hotel Metropol of Moscow, Russia still stands after being constructed in 1907. The style of the architecture of the Hotel Metropol is Art Nouveau and its design was the result of collaboration between three architects named Vladimir Shukhov, Lev Kekushev, and William Walcot and three artists named Nikolai Andreev, Alexander Golovin, Mikhail Vrubel.

Having been brought back to its original function as one of the Moscow hotels, the Hotel Metropol currently offers 362 rooms for occupancy to the public. Each room in the hotel is unique because each has a different shape or special décor that differentiate it from the other 361 rooms inside.

Back in 1898, the lot on which the present Hotel Metropol stands was originally purchased to become the site of a new opera hall. The lot was purchased by Sawa Mamontov (who was eventually taken off the project when he was sentenced to jail due to fraud) and Petersburg Insurance for this purpose. Once Mamontov was removed from the project and jailed, Petersburg Insurance took over management of the project but scrapped plans for the opera hall.

From an architectural perspective, the Hotel Metropol is one rectangular building that was constructed so that it would not require any beams or columns to support its parts. Construction was initiated in 1899 and culminated in 1907. The structural system is based on reinforced concrete.

It is notable that the Hotel Metropol survived the turmoil during the 1917 Russian Revolution and still stands today as one of the historical yet functional Moscow hotels. Once the Bolsheviks were in power after the Russian Revolution, they nationalized Hotel Metropol in 1918 and called it the Second House of Soviets. It no longer functioned as one of the Moscow hotels under the Bolsheviks – rather, the new Soviet bureaucrats used the Hotel Metropol building for both living quarters and office space.

It was only much later (during the 1930s) that the Hotel Metropol building was restored to its previous role as one of the functional Moscow hotels.
When 1986 came around, certain Finnish companies initiated a major restoration of the Hotel Metropol which lasted until 1991. The restoration was an offshoot of bilateral trade between the Soviets and the Finns.

At present, the Hotel Metropol is considered one of the five-star luxury Moscow hotels which has a prized location at the center of the city of Moscow itself. It is also conveniently located right across from the Bolshoi Theater, while the Kremlin and the Red Square sit just three minutes away from the Hotel Metropol if you walk. It serves both European and Russian cuisine in its three in-house restaurants.

From the airport, you require just a 45-minute drive to get to Hotel Metropol. If you disembark at the Leningradsky Railway Station, the Hotel Metropol is just 15 minutes away from that station by car.

The five-star luxury hotel designation of Hotel Metropol is no laughing matter because the hotel has garnered multiple awards from 2001 to 2006, giving recognition to this hotel with the very long history and a reputation to uphold. Among the recognition it has received are the 2002 “International Golden Trophy for Quality” in Paris; the 2003 “17th European Gold Award for Quality” also in Paris; and the 2005 “Golden Europe Award for Quality and Commercial Prestige” in Brussels. These awards are only a fitting reminder that some things in life really do get better as they age.

Hilton Moscow Leningradskaya Hotel – an Example of Neoclassical Moscow Hotels

The Hilton Moscow Leningradskaya Hotel may be recognized by visitors on a repeat visit to Moscow as one of the so-called Seven Sisters – skyscrapers which were built in Moscow between 1947 to 1953 under the Stalinist regime. An eight skyscraper that was supposed to be constructed as part of the Stalin Moscow development plan was never actually built.

As one of the Moscow hotels built under the Stalinist neoclassical style of architecture, the Hilton Moscow Leningradskaya Hotel was meant to be the best luxury hotel Moscow could offer at the time it was finished. People who are familiar with the 1930s architectural style of American skyscrapers can see elements of that style mixed with the Russian neoclassical style in the architecture of the Hilton Moscow Leningradskaya Hotel.

At present, the Hilton Moscow Leningradskaya Hotel is a member of the global Hilton hotel chain. It became part of the Hilton group of hotels after an investment worth millions of dollars was poured into its restoration plus renovation. It now offers not just lodgings to visitors but also the services of a business center, a conference hall, a health center, a gift shop, an exchange office, a post office, a hairdresser, a billiard room, a café, a casino, a lounge, a bar, and a restaurant to its hotel guests.

Back when the Hilton Moscow Leningradskaya Hotel was known simply as the Hotel Leningradskaya, Khruschev commented that even though the building followed the Stalinist doctrine for neoclassical Moscow hotels, it was very inefficiently constructed. The cost of building the 354 rooms in this one hotel was actually equivalent to 1000 rooms, plus not all of the total space could be rent-able, said Khruschev (meaning that a mere 22% of the overall space was rent-able in his opinion.) Khruschev further noted that the hotel beds were 50% more expensive compared to the costs per bed of another of the Moscow hotels, namely Moskva Hotel.

Architectural history buffs will also find that the Hilton Moscow Leningradskaya Hotel (like all the skyscrapers part of the Seven Sisters group) had to be rather short by American standards for skyscrapers because of another construction-related inefficiency – the total weight per skyscraper was too heavy for them to become tall buildings. In fact, each of the Seven Sisters was much heavier than the skyscrapers in the US.

Fortunately, even though the Seven Sisters had some defects in style and construction, they remained stable enough by building engineering standards to last up to today. There are other existing Moscow hotels in the city such as the Hotel Metropol and the Hotel Moskva, but none of these other Moscow hotels has been able to make it to the Guinness Book of World Records like the Hilton Moscow Leningradskaya Hotel. The Hilton Moscow Leningradskaya Hotel was recognized by Guinness record takers as having one of the lengthiest lighting fixtures to be found anywhere in the world. Not bad for a Moscow hotel once deemed by Soviet leader Kruschev as being a product of bureaucratic excesses.
